Our History
Manchester Credit Union (MCU) began life in 1991 although in those days it was known as Beswick and Openshaw Credit Union.
The success of MCU has been the result of the fantastic efforts of a number of volunteers to set it up in conjunction with the local Church of the Resurrection. Over the years it amalgamated with a number of other smaller credit unions in Greater Manchester including Hattersley, Moneyspinner, Gorton and Wythenshawe.
The volunteers kept it going until September 2000 when they managed to attract some urban regeneration funding and were able to open our first shop front employing Christine Moore as manager. Christine is still part of MCU today serving as the Chief Executive. At the time Christine joined MCU had 103 members; today we have over 30,000.
